I bought facials, bought all the anti-aging and acne products, and even tried Proactiv a few times.
I even went to a dermatologist who basically recommended I try another crème.
None of it worked. Wtf!
I just felt like I was cursed. Like I had the skin equivalent of a broken down old clunker of a car with bad paint. When what I wanted was a nice new Mercedes with a bright, shiny new paint job.
So I’d pack on the makeup and hide all my skin imperfections – it was the only thing I know how to do – since nothing else was working.
And It Began Hurting My Personal Life
If I’m being honest, it’s at least partly due to the fact that I was embarrassed about my skin fat.
I’d see myself in pictures and think “Oh man, I look horrible.” So, of course, I stopped taking photos.
No more Instagram or group pics with the girls.
I knew something had to change, but what?
Seriously, what could I do?
It wasn’t that I was making excuses like, say, people who need to go to the gym. I just honestly didn’t know what else I could do.
I kept telling myself it wasn’t in the stars for me to have nice skin. Or some variation of that.
I didn’t think anything could help. BUT I NEEDED HELP LIKE CRAZY!
I needed to get out of my own way, and a miracle to happen even more.
…That miracle came in the form of a family friend named Stacy.
I hadn’t seen Stacy in years, but she looked great. She was about 10 years older than me but looked 10 years younger because her skin was so smooth.
Since I’d last seen her she had gotten deep into healthy living. She was now a part-time dietician and a skin care expert for a company based in France. And she told me that she could easily whip my skin into shape.
I said, “Dietician and skin care – how did you get into those two different things?” And she kinda laughed. “I got into them because they’re so interconnected.”
“How?” I asked
“Having healthy, clear skin isn’t luck or good genetics. It has everything to do with what you put in your body, not on your skin.” She said without a bit of hesitation.
She told me she was going to break it all down for me..
…And this is what I learned.
Step 1: She told me how food affected the body
Your skin is a direct reflection of what is going on inside your body so what you put in your mouth is as important as what you put on your skin.
Food gets digested down into glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that the body uses for survival and for maintenance and repair of our tissue.
Eating a healthy balanced diet along with adequate hydration will help to build healthy skin, but eating a diet rich in processed junk foods, sugars, saturated fats, and dairy can deprive your skin of the vital nutrients needed for a healthy glow.
Diets high in animal proteins can cause a bunch of health problems ranging from increased risk of heart disease and certain cancers to weight gain and autoimmune disorders, deteriorating digestive probiotics within.
But what many people don’t realize is just how the consumption of animal protein really affects aging. Animal proteins are unhealthy and can lead to critical imbalances in your body that drain you of your energy, and drain minerals from your bones and cells – which actually speeds up the aging process.
Your body functions within a very narrow range of pH at about 7.0, which is slightly alkaline. When the foods we eat move our body out of this range of alkalinity, our cells don’t function properly. In these cases, your body then seeks to pull mineral salts from cells and bones in order to restore alkalinity. This can result in free radical formation, which accelerates the aging process.
(It can also contribute to bone demineralization, which leads to weakened bones and, ultimately, osteoporosis.)
Animal proteins are the most metabolically acidic foods humans eat. It creates conditions of acidity within the body after ingestion, forcing the body to seek to return to an alkaline state through demineralization of the bones and the cells. The result of eating significant amounts of animal protein is accelerated aging.
An anti-aging diet is one that is low in animal products (meat, dairy, and eggs). Instead, it is high in beneficial raw plant foods like green vegetables, other vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. These foods fight the free radicals that age you. They also create alkalinity in the body, protecting cellular function and promoting great health.

Step 2: She told me I’d have to learn to reimagine food.
She told me I wouldn’t be able to eat everything.
But there was good news.
I would be able to eat a lot more than I thought I could, without gaining weight... and it would be delicious.
She told me that I’d have to learn great tasting food had nothing to do with having animal products in it. That it was the textures and flavor that make all the difference in the world.
She then made me a plant-based dinner and it was nothing short of delicious. I was in!
Step 3: She Made Me A Meal Plan…
Stacy made me a meal plan with food suggestions and a shopping list.
It was an easy meal plan to follow, too.
As an example…
For breakfast, I’d get to eat a delicious peanut butter strawberry smoothie with smashed avocado on toast.
It was soooo delicious and filling! And kinda shocking, because it just seemed too good to be true.
But It made complete sense if you think about it. She knows that proper plant-based eating doesn’t follow traditional rules like it does when you’re eating animal products.
She called plant-based food ‘sanity food’ because it tasted great without you ever feeling deprived while getting healthy.
Apparently, You are what you eat
I’m sure you’ve heard this as many times as me, and not really given much thought to it… until it mattered.
I used to eat whatever I wanted. When I wanted. How I wanted. And foolishly I’d be shocked at why my skin wasn't as perfect as the cover girl models on commercials.
A month later and my skin looked amazing. And I’m not talking about me just looking in the mirror seeing what I want to see. I mean, I look amazing because people tell me that all the time.
“I look younger.”
“My skin is glowing.”
“What’s my secret?”
I’ve heard them all. And it feels fantastic!
