7 Cartoon Characters That Are Vegan (Number 5 Will Shock You!)

Cartoons are an essential part of any child’s upbringing. They serve many purposes and, aside from having entertained our younger selves on Sunday mornings while our parents were completing household chores, they gave us something to aspire to be. They set an example to us, thus playing a powerful role in molding us. I spent a good 20 minutes (that’s a lot of time in my books) thinking about all the cartoon characters I grew up loving and admiring and then I took it to another level with a not so simple question- how many of those animated figures were in fact vegan? Or at the very least, vegetarian…

'Not many'. was the answer. However, I did do some online researching and 5th gear thinking and found 7 convincing plant-based cartoon characters that are arguably vegan or vegetarian. Some of which are immensely popular. So, *drumroll*, I hereby present to you our favorite cartoon characters with an extra dash of compassion!

Lisa Simpson

Vegan cartoon characters
Homer: Lisa, honey, are you saying you’re never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?

Lisa: No.

Homer: Ham?

Lisa: No.

Homer: Pork chops?

Lisa: Dad! Those all come from the same animal!

This shouldn’t be new to you. Lisa, one of the main stars of The Simpsons, does not eat meat. She constantly stands up for the rights of animals and has, on the odd occasion engaged in activism. Arguably one of the most compassionate cartoon characters in history.

Bananaman

Bananaman, aka Eric Wimp, is indubitably vegan. I mean, come on! The guy’s strength amplifies a hundredfold when he eats a banana, so we can only assume that fruits and vegetables have a super positive effect on his body. I mean, why would you eat meat if you were him, hey?

Captain Planet and the Planeteers

The ultimate vegan cartoon protagonist. No cartoon character cares about the environment as much as Captain Planet. He’d be aware of the obvious negative effect animal slaughter has on the environment and would not, in his right mind even consider contributing to this problem. A true vegan and a model environmentalist.

Bugs Bunny

I mean, come on, Doc. What more needs to be said? The dude’s a BUNNY and has only ever been seen eating carrots. A true icon and arguably one of the most famous cartoon characters of all time!

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE BECOMING VEGR'S FOR A REASON!

Brian Griffin

is brian griffin vegan?

This was a shock to me. Brian Griffin, arguably one of the most likable (and sane) characters of that show is a vegan. Yes. I have the evidence to back it up. In season 8, Episode 8 Brian accidentally kills another dog and is shocked by how little everyone cares. He then tries to convince everyone, through a powerfully compelling speech, that all lives are equal. The speech sounded like something coming out of the mouth of the infamous Gary Yurofsky. Unfortunately, the speech was disrupted by Peter initiating a riot. Damn you, Peter!

Go , Brian!

Popeye

is popeye vegan?

Everyone’s favorite sailor man loves his spinach! But when I did my research, there’s no footage of him eating anything else other than vegetables, which leaves me to conclude that Popeye is, in fact, vegan! In one episode, a gopher kept trying to steal his spinach and when he finally captured the gopher, he couldn’t bring himself to do anything to him and just let him go. Popeye is compassionate and loves his Spinach! I mean, if you were him, would you eat anything else? I think not!

Sharon Spitz

teenage vegans

Voiced by one of my childhood crushes- Alicia Silverstone, who, ironically, happens to be vegan herself. Sharon Spitz is the star of the show Braceface. The charming 14 year old, ninth grade student is a fervent animal rights activist and an important role model to many young girls!
